About the Department

The Department of History started as regular academic department of the then Cotton College in May, 1901. In 1909-10 the college was raised to the First Grade college status, and in the beginning of the session1913-14, Department got affiliated to Calcultta University. With the establishment of Gauhati University, the department got affiliated to Gauhati University in 1948. Cotton College was upgraded to Cotton University in 2017, and since then the Department of History has been offering UG and PG level course in history along with an active PhD program running since 2018. The Department counts among its alumni, renowned academician such as S.K Borpujari, N.N Acharya, Yasmin Saikia.
